New green technologies are moving forward at a rapid pace

They not only help the environment and economic stability, but they also create
new and exciting jobs.  Miles Community College is offering a new 2-year degree
in Biofuels beginning autumn 2008.  The associate’s degree with emphasis in
biofuels is our newest program at MCC.  This two year program is designed to
allow students to attain employment upon graduation in biofuels production and
other related endeavors such as feedstock production and procurement and co-
    product marketing and use.

Students may also transfer to a four-year institution to complete higher degrees
in science, engineering, agriculture, or business needed for non-entry level
    positions in the biofuels industry.

Our classes are a mixture of traditional lectures, hands-on activities and laboratory work. In our labs, students
actually make biodiesel and learn the fine art of troubleshooting the production of biofuels. We hope to place
all our students in internships.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:

·                     > Demonstrate an understanding of systems perspectives in industry

·                     > Exhibit knowledge of communication, organization, and leadership styles

·                     > Display an understanding of basic scientific processes in biofuel production

·                     > Identify economic and technical constraints in the biofuels industry

·                     > Demonstrate an understanding of biofuel feedstocks

·                     > Identify uses for co-products

·                     > Articulate an understanding of wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, and biofuels technologies

·                     > Illustrate an understanding of basic mechanical functions applied in biofuels
